An idea sparked during an ordinary moment at Iden Manor Nursing Home in Staplehurst has grown into an activity book created by two of its Care Practitioners.
Simple Moments, Happy Hearts was developed by Aderiyike “Ade” Adesanya, with Patrick Okafor contributing to its content. Designed for older adults, it brings together colouring pages, spot-the-difference pictures and activities featuring familiar everyday objects.
Ade’s idea began when she noticed a resident absorbed in a book. Curious about what had captured their attention, she discovered it was a colouring book and began thinking about how she could create something more relevant for the older people she supports.
Drawing on her background in teaching, Ade wanted to bring what she knew about learning and nurturing into her care work. She discussed the idea with Patrick, a graphic designer by trade, who helped explore how it could be presented visually and made easy for residents to use.
The result is a book intended to offer enjoyable moments of recognition, creativity and calm. It reflects the attention Ade and Patrick give to the people they support, as well as their determination to turn an idea from their day-to-day care work into something others can enjoy.
“We are truly grateful for the inspiration we have received from the home and from the wonderful people and experiences around us. The encouragement, kindness and support we have received from Jean Reeves-Yates, the home Manager has played an important part in inspiring us to create something meaningful that we hope can make a positive difference.” Said Patrick and Ade.
All proceeds from sales of Simple Moments, Happy Hearts are being donated to charity.
Umbreen David, Managing Director at Iden Manor Nursing Home said: “What I love about this is that it started with Ade noticing what mattered to one resident and asking what more she could do. She and Patrick brought their skills together, listened to residents and took the idea all the way through to a finished book. That shows such care and initiative. I’m proud that they saw an opportunity to make everyday moments more enjoyable for the people we support and had the determination to make it happen.”
