Residents at Fairways Care Home have fallen head over heels about a new visitor who has stolen hearts, sparked smiles and melted even the toughest of hearts.
Romeo, an adorable 18-month-old Shih Tzu, who recently visited the New Romney care home proved an instant hit with residents and staff alike.
The fluffy four-legged charmer was brought into the home by care team member Vicky and quickly set about making friends, offering cuddles, companionship and plenty of tail-wagging affection. Before long, residents were queuing up for a cuddle with the lovable pooch, who seemed more than happy to soak up the attention.
And true to his name, Romeo certainly knew how to charm his audience. Residents spent the afternoon stroking, cuddling and chatting to their new furry friend, with many reminiscing about dogs they had owned throughout their lives saying: “He was absolutely gorgeous,” “I could have cuddled him all day.”
Dogs are frequently used as therapy animals because of their ability to reduce stress, encourage social interaction and provide comfort and companionship. Studies have shown that spending time with animals can help lower anxiety levels, improve mood and even reduce feelings of loneliness.
At Fairways, Romeo appeared to have mastered the role naturally. Whether he was curling up beside people, accepting a fuss behind the ears or simply gazing up with his big expressive eyes, he brought joy wherever he went.
Alison Yarnley, Care Home Manager at Fairways Care Home said: “Romeo was an absolute superstar. The reaction from residents was wonderful to see. Some people instantly connected with him because they had owned dogs themselves, while others simply couldn’t resist his friendly nature. He made everyone smile the moment he walked into the room.”
The home hopes Romeo’s visit will be the first of many. Judging by the number of residents already asking when he will be back, the little Shih Tzu has gained a fan club of devoted followers. The visit wasn’t just fun; it also highlighted the remarkable impact animals can have on wellbeing.
