An initiative to rejuvenate Chatham town centre and make it a safer place has been launched with a proactive operation.
Kent Police working with Medway Council and other partner organisations on a new Clear, Hold, Build scheme, which commenced on Friday 29th May 2026.
The Clear, Hold, Build initiative aims to target and remove those responsible for causing problems in a particular area and ensure a safer, more peaceful environment for everyone else.
This current scheme looks to enhance the town centre, with the targeted patch being bordered by New Cut, Hards Town, Rope Walk and Medway Street.
Chief Inspector Gary Woodward, District Commander for Medway, said ‘We have previously completed a localised Clear, Hold, Build scheme in the New Road area of Chatham which effectively reduced crime reports. We’re now expanding it to encompass the whole town centre to spread its benefits to even more residents. Schemes such as these have proven effective both locally and nationally to reduce reported offences in the area, so we are expecting this new operation to achieve the same impact. The vast majority of Chatham’s community are law-abiding and want to enjoy their lives free from crime and antisocial behaviour. We are confident Clear, Hold, Build will be effective in achieving this goal.’
The area is then held and stabilised through high-visibility patrols, assistance from partner agencies and community engagement.
With support from key stakeholders, residents will then be equipped and empowered to build a strong and resilient community free from crime and exploitation.
Councillor Alex Paterson, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, Highways and Enforcement, said ‘This is an exciting moment for Chatham and a great opportunity to give the town centre another boost. There’s so much positive work going on amongst town centre businesses and community groups already, and this action will help us all build a safer and thriving community.’
