Lorry Fire Closes M20 During Monday Morning Rush Hour

Motorists intending to use the M20 towards London have been advised to find an alternative route after a HGV caught fire during the early hours of Monday morning on 8th September 2025.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service were alerted to the vehicle fire at around 5.30am and closed the road to deal with the flames. The incident happened between Junction 3 (M26), at the Addington Interchange, and Junction 1 (M25), at the Swanley interchange, near the top of Wrotham Hill.

Three loud explosions could be heard in neighbouring villages in the early hours.

Thankfully the drivers cab was still intact following the fire and it is thought that the driver is unhurt.

There are currently delays of 50 minutes. There is currently 10 miles (40 minutes) of congestion on the A2 from the M2 Medway Viaduct past Gravesend, and A20 queues from Leybourne past Brands Hatch. Drivers are being told to use the M26 and M25 as a diversion.
