Man Jailed After Serious Assault In Herne Bay

A man from Herne Bay has been given an 11-year jail term after he carried out a serious assault on a woman in a flat in the seaside town.

Ian McQuaide attacked the woman, who is known to him, at an address in Central Parade on 5th September 2022 before calling the emergency services himself.

He claimed the victim’s wound was self-inflicted, before going outside to smoke a cigarette whilst the woman lay alone with a serious injury.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and gave the victim life-saving medical attention before she was taken to a London hospital for further treatment.

The victim told police officers that McQuaide had caused the injuries with a knife and he was promptly arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. Searches of the property recovered two knives and an investigation found the assault had taken place in the flat’s bathroom.

McQuaide admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent and controlling or coercive behaviour at Canterbury Crown Court and was jailed for 11 years on 29th September 2023.

The 35-year-old will serve an extra four years on licence after that term and will be the subject of an indefinite restraining order protecting the victim.

McQuaide was in breach of a suspended sentence order for a previous assault at the time and also admitted assaulting another woman known to him and causing criminal damage to her property on 20th June 2022.

Detective Sergeant David McIntyre, Kent Police’s investigating officer, said ‘This was a horrific attack and it is only thanks to the work of medics that we are not dealing with an even more serious offence. I commend both victims for their bravery in coming forward’.
