In an effort to raise awareness about the importance of growing plants for biodiversity, Kent housebuilder, David Wilson Homes, recently held a workshop with East Malling food education charity Communigrow. This workshop encouraged residents at its The Poppies development in Maidstone to ‘get growing’ and marks the start of a partnership in educating people across the area to plant the correct flowers, fruit and vegetables throughout the year.
Since the 1930s, the UK has lost 97% of its wildflower meadows, putting many plants and animals at risk. David Wilson Kent has continuously shown through its initiatives its dedication to contributing to environmental sustainability. Its workshop with Communigrow aims to educate residents of The Poppies on how to grow their own vegetables and plants.
Communigrow offers multiple programmes designed to connect local people with the natural world. The charity focuses on growing vegetables sustainably and has a variety of educational green spaces on site for its community, including wildflower meadows, pollinator banks, wildlife habitats, a wetland pond and more.
Joshua Piercey, Development Manager at Communigrow, said: “This workshop continues our partnership with David Wilson Kent after their team helped to construct our popular ‘Show Gardens’ educational area last summer. The significant loss of wildflower meadows across the country is heartbreaking, and we appreciate the efforts David Wilson Kent is taking to raise awareness over the issue with our workshop, as it aligns with our values in growing eco-friendly gardens. The workshop has helped those living at the development gain knowledge and skills in how to grow their own vegetables and have their garden prepared for the 2025 growing season.”
Natalie Perry, Director of Sales & Marketing at David Wilson Kent, comments: “We find it so important to work with local communities, and what better way to raise awareness over a crucial matter than with residents at our own development? We’re pleased to have the help of Communigrow at our workshop as their cause is something we deem pertinent to share.
It’s necessary for us at David Wilson Kent to contribute as much as we can to environmental sustainability. Watching residents partake in the workshop is inspiring, and we’re glad to see their gardens set and ready to grow their own vegetables!”
