Work by neighbourhood police in Margate has led to a suspected nuisance rider being arrested, and a knife, along with an illegal bike, being seized.
Residents had made police officers aware of a modified pedal cycle that was reportedly being ridden in a dangerous and antisocial manner in areas of Westgate-on-Sea and Garlinge.
On Thursday 22nd October 2026, patrols in Canterbury Road saw a suspicious bike and followed it along Bridge Road to Westgate Bay Avenue.
The rider was made to stop and was detained by officers. A search was completed at the scene and a kitchen knife and wrench were recovered, as was the bike.
A 16 year old boy was arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article, driving without a licence and driving without insurance. He was taken into custody and has since been bailed while enquiries continue.
The modified pedal cycle was later tested and found to be capable of reaching speeds in excess of 65mph.
PC Jason Oram said ‘Antisocial behaviour of this nature is not just intimidating and unpleasant for members of the local community, it is highly disruptive to other road users, and extremely dangerous. It is illegal to ride a modified pedal cycle such as this one on a public road, in a cycle lane or on a pavement. We want everyone to feel safe when out and about in our communities, which is why we will continue to take action against those who would offend in this way.’
