Swale Borough Council are said to be ‘absolutely devastated’ after a fire caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to play equipment at Beachfields sandpit.
The fire happened on Thursday evening and consumed the whole structure of a castle play area. The six metre high castle included a climbing net, two slides and a sliding pole and was accessible for wheelchair users and children with limited mobility.
It was constructed in 2019 as part of a £50,000 refurbishment plan at the play area.
The castle was completely destroyed in the blaze, with the council adding that it is ‘heart-breaking for the local community, including our officers’.
Swale Council have already had someone on the scene last night and they will be assessing the full extent of the damage in due course.
