Police Appeal After School Children Hurt In Road Traffic Accident

Kent Police are appealing for information or dashcam footage following a serious collision between a tractor and a bus on A227 South Street in Meopham, near Culverstone Green yesterday.

Police officers, paramedics and the air ambulance were all called to the scene at 3.30pm on Wednesday 22nd May, where 12 people – including the bus driver and five youngsters – were injured. One child was flown to King College Hospital by air ambulance.

The road remained closed last night as investigations into the accident continued. It would appear from eye witness reports that the bus was struck by the tractor, which was approaching the A227 from a side road with its metal bucket in a raised position.

The incident is being investigated by Kent Police’s Serious Collision Unit (SCIU) and officers are appealing to any witnesses to contact them. Anyone who may be able to assist the investigation should call SCIU on 01622 798538 or email sciu.td@kent.police.uk quoting reference EX/DGC/051/24.

Meopham School sent an email to parents saying “We are aware of the serious incident in the community this evening which will have been distressing for anyone who witnessed it or was involved.”

“Please check traffic reports in the morning as there may be implications for travelling to school with the A227 remaining closed and ensure that more time is allocated for any journey. As mentioned, we do appreciate this will have been distressing for our students and if your child feels unsettled then please direct them to members of staff who will be able to provide support.”

The top section of the bus was almost ripped off in the collision

By Thursday lunchtime, one child remains in a London hospital in a serious but stable condition, while three others continue to be treated for serious injuries.

A 33-year-old man from East Sussex has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has since been bailed to return to the police station, pending further investigation.
