On Saturday 6th June at 3.46pm, the All Weather lifeboat Diamond Jubilee stationed at Ramsgate was paged by the UK Coastguard in response to a Mayday call from a Belgian yacht located just off Broadstairs.
The lifeboat proceeded at best speed to the casualty in the Southerly near gale force 7 wind, and on arrival at the scene it became apparent that the yacht had lost it’s mast.
In difficult conditions a towline was attached between the stricken yacht and the lifeboat and it returned to Ramsgate at 4 knots, arriving at 5:15pm where the yacht was safely berthed in the outer harbour. There were no injuries reported and everyone made it back safely.
