Car Ploughs Into Family On Holiday In Ramsgate Killing Two

A black Alpha Romeo ploughed into the family-of-five at 9.30pm last night outside a multi-stoey car park in Ramsgate. The incident happend in Leopold Street as the family visiting from Israel were waiting for a bus.

The bench that they were sitting on was destroyed in the crash, with deep marks left in a brick wall. A man in his 80s and a woman in her 30s both sadly died a short time afterwards. A girl of primary school age also suffered serious injuries and was taken to a London hospital for treatment. A man in his 40s and a boy of primary school age sustained minor injuries.

The car left the scene with police reporting later on that a local man in his 30’s had been arrested over the huge crash.

Mayor of Ramsgate Cllr Raushan Ara, who has a business nearby, said her heart goes out to the family. She added that the incident reinforces the need for ‘speed controls’ in the town, reducing the limit to 20mph. She said ‘We have been fighting for this for many years.’

A spokesman for Kent Police said ‘Officers attended and a 30-year-old man from Ramsgate was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and leaving the scene of a collision. He is also currently receiving hospital treatment for minor injuries’.

‘Enquiries into the incident are being carried out by officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit who are keen to hear from any witnesses, local businesses with CCTV evidence or drivers with relevant dashcam footage.’
