Dramatic footage has been released showing a car losing control and smashing into a BP petrol station on the A20 Swanley bypass. It is thought the accident occured sometime in the afternoon on Saturday 15th August 2020.
The video, published by Kent999’s shows a Black Mercedes speeding along the fast lane on the A20 towards Swanley when the driver loses control. Footage from the video seems to show the car hit a patch of water and starts to spin as it aquaplanes across the road.
Aquaplaning occurs when there is too much water for the road tyre to dissipate, so the tyre starts to slide over the surface of the water. This can happen above 80mph, but it does depend on the amount of water on the road and the depth of tread on the tyres. This section of road is notorious for a lot of running surface water during heavy rain, due to the camber of the road.
From the video, it appears that the black Mercedes is driving at excess speed, especially with the wet road conditions at the time of the accident.
The spinning car then heads directly for the petrol pumps, as the driver tries in vain to regain control. At the last minutes the car spins in the opposite direction, so that it collides with the petrol pumps and a parked car, causing a large amount of damage.
Thankfully, there was no one standing in the immediate area, otherwise this accident could have been more serious. Once the vehicle has stopped, a male and a female passenger can be seen emering from the Mercedes.
It is unknown at this time if they will face prosecution for dangerous driving.
