Eurostar Services To Continue Snubbing Kent Stations

Eurostar has confirmed it will review the use of Kent stations later this year, but for now all services will continue to commence in London.

Despite calls for the trains to return by KCC official, they have not stopped at Ebbsfleet and Ashford since March 2020. Kent passengers have to travel to St Pancras instead and then travel almost back past their front doors as they go through Kent towards the tunnel to France.

Kent County Council leader Roger Gough said he was “disappointed” the trains’ reinstatement “has yet to occur”. He has called for more clarity on the conditions under which Eurostar would “deem services in Kent to be viable”.

The operator said it had hoped to resume the service in 2022, but this has been delayed until 2023 amid falling passenger numbers and profits. It will review the decision for changes in 2023 until later this year.

Ashford Borough Council leader Gerry Clarkson said “The prospect that Eurostar services will not return to Ashford International Station until 2023 represents a real challenge for those residents and businesses that rely on the service and those that work at the station.”

The decision will be based on general business performance, in particular how the local market has evolved since Covid

Environmentalist ‘Green’ party county councillor Rich Lehmann asked for the “swiftest” resumption of the services saying the additional journeys into London are a waste, when the trains are travelling though the Kent stations.

Despite talks between Eurostar, Kent County Council, the local transport authority and Ashford Borough Council, Eurostar continue to say “It is a non from us!”

A Eurostar spokesperson, who really couldn’t care less about Kent travellers, said “Kent services will not resume this year. We have already said it will be 2023 at the earliest and that we will review this decision towards the end of the year.”
