The Kent Spitfires cricket team have begun their 2022 T20 Blast defence with a game against Somerset last night.
A great campaign last year saw the victorious Spitfires lift the 2021 Vitality Blast trophy following a 25 run win over Somerset at Edgbaston. The win saw Kent lift their first T20 trophy since 2007.
The team returned to Canterbury for the opening fixture last night and expectations were high for them to repeat the winning run from 2021. So could the team rise to the challenge as they were up against Somerset again?
No.
Sadly Somerset were out for revenge after losing last years final and were too strong for the Kent team.
Despite the defending champions having three England players in their top four, they were put out to bat first and made 162 for 6 after twenty overs.
Somerset knew the target they needed to chase and made 166 – 2 after 19.1 overs, giving them the victory on the night.
It is not all doom and gloom for Kent, as they lost both group games to Somerset last season, but still managed to top the group after 14 games.
Kent’s next match is another home fixture on Friday against the Essex Eagles.
