Large Fire At Shop Being Renovated In Blackfen

A large fire happened at Blackfen Road just after 1pm yesterday (Tuesday 22nd July), allegedly broke out due to a workman welding at the property which was being renovated to become a new Asda Express.

The whole of the ground floor, first floor and roof of a shop with flats above was alight, with part of an adjacent roof also alight.

People were advised to avoid the area due to the blaze.

At least six fire engines and around 40 firefighters tackled the blaze in a building that used to be Bargain Appliances. Mobile phone signals possibly affected as masts are attached to the property.

The blaze was put out by 4.39pm.

Station Commander Steve Howlett said “This was a very visible fire which produced a significant amount of smoke in the area. One of our new 32-metre turntable ladders was used as a water tower at the incident, to help tackle flames from height.”
