Tenterden-based artist Mr Doodle has designed a mural for Ashford, Kent, described as “one of the world’s longest illustrations.”

The internationally acclaimed artist, also known as Sam Cox, created the 203-metre mural in just one day on Friday, December 6th.

Located at the junction of Avenue Jacques Faucheux and Beaver Road, the painted hoardings are part of the proposed Infinity development, a residential scheme previously referred to as the ‘Ashford Shard.’

Mr Doodle said: “While travelling by train for various projects, I would always come across this large black hoarding, and nothing inspires me more than giant, blank spaces as they’re amazing opportunities to paint.”

The mural celebrates his debut album, ‘Straight Outta Doodleland,’ released on Thursday, December 12th, with the album’s title marked numerous times across the artwork.

The mural illustrates bold, playful characters, such as Mr Doodle, Mrs Doodle, and Doodle Dog, all listening to music, either through speakers or headphones, tying the theme of music consistently throughout the piece.

In addition to his Ashford contribution, Mr Doodle also created another mural in London the same week, featuring a Doodle Rocket crashing into the ground from Doodleland, as part of his public projects celebrating the album.

Chris Dixon, Ashford Borough Council’s (ABC) Arts & Cultural Industries Manager, said: “Mr Doodle was eager to work on the Infinity site hoardings, which is owned by our commercial housing arm, A Better Choice for Property, and it was happy to give permission.”

“The following day, Mr Doodle hit the ground running at 8 am and remarkably completed the work in just one day.”

Tracey Kerly, ABC’s Council Chief Executive, added: “It’s already created lots of interest, and it’s been lovely to see lots of selfies of passers-by on social media.”

“It’s worth pointing out that this amazing public artwork has been delivered at absolutely no cost to the council – Mr Doodle is a huge fan.”

“Mr Doodle has told us he had so many nice and positive comments on the day, and I think people will really enjoy the piece and how it’s brightened up this prominent and busy road junction in Ashford.”

Known for his bold projects, Mr Doodle has showcased his work across Kent before.

Earlier this summer, he marked the 50th anniversary of the Kent and East Sussex Railway by painting a carriage.

And in 2022, he covered his 12-room mansion in St Michaels with his signature black-and-white illustrations.

Furthermore, he has taken part in previous initiatives organised by ABC, including decorating a Snowdog for the art trail in 2018.

Mr Doodle added: “I hope the mural brings a sense of joy and a love for the town as I love Ashford and have made several pieces there now, so I hope people feel that fondness I have for the town through my artwork.”
