With more than 28,000 people living with a learning disability in Kent , local housebuilder Barratt David Wilson Homes has recently donated £1,500 to East Kent Mencap, a charity supporting adults and children with learning disabilities.
Based in East Kent, the charity supports people living in Thanet, Canterbury and Swale with learning disabilities to live as independently as possible and to achieve the things they want from life. East Kent Mencap’s aim is to build its members’ confidence, self-esteem and skills, creating opportunities for everyone both now and in the future. The charity offers a number of services including virtual activities, housing, community activities at the Hubs, a variety of clubs for people to join including bowling, a domiciliary service and more.
The £1,500 donation comes from The Barratt Foundation, the housebuilder’s charity partnership, which aims to support local charities and groups wherever Barratt Redrow operates across the UK. The donation has contributed towards bi-folding doors and the building of a partition at East Kent Mencap’s Sheerness Hub. The new installations have created a more flexible and accessible space for members to take part in activities.
Rebecca Walker, Acting Community, Housing and Hub Manager at East Kent Mencap, commented: “There are thousands of people living with learning disabilities in our Kent communities, and their needs must never be overlooked. We are incredibly grateful for the generous donation from Barratt David Wilson Kent, which has helped us fund a new partition at one of our hubs. This improvement has made the space more accessible and flexible, allowing us to host a wider range of activities and making it easier for our members to use and enjoy the space.”
Natalie Perry, Sales & Marketing Director at Barratt David Wilson Kent, added: “Knowing this donation has helped create a more accessible space for people with learning disabilities is incredibly meaningful to us, and we are very proud that we can support such a worthy cause. We are pleased to hear the team can host a wider range of activities now in a more comfortable environment and look forward to hearing how the members are finding the improved space!”
