RMT To Hold Westminster March For Ex P&O Employees

The RMT Union is set to hold a number of events in London to mark the first anniversary of P&O sacking a huge number of staff.

It was nearly a year ago that P&O dismissed 786 staff and replaced them with cheaper agency staff. The RMT, led by Mick Lynch, say that their dismissals were illegal because they were done with no consultation. Therefore the RMT is holding these events in Westminster to expose the lack of sanctions for P&O owners DP World.

On Tuesday 14th March 2023 there will be a demonstration at 1pm at the Old Palace Yard in SW1. This will be followed at 2pm by a rally to the committee room at the House of Lords.

Speakers at the event will include Louise Haigh MP, Shadow Transport Secretary, Darren Procter, RMT National Secretary and Mick Lynch himself.

The P&O boats were kept in harbours for many weeks until the new staff were trained and able to gain their safety certificates. But since then, it has gone very quiet and the 786 staff have been abandoned by the Government to seek alternative employment.

The rally hopes to bring the issue back into the public spotlight to show that companies cannot do what they want and should follow the laws set out to protect employees.

Let’s hope they have planned this event on a day when there are no train strikes!
